Flight Control review: A fun casual iPhone game

I’ve been having a bit of fun with Flight Control over the last few weeks.

In this simple but attractive game your job is to land incoming aircraft by dragging out flight paths towards the two runways and helipad. Sounds easy enough, but once several aircraft appear onscreen it becomes increasingly difficult to avoid them crashing into each other.

Fortunately you can plot a new flight path for an aircraft at any time. Even allowing for this, though, the game quickly reaches a frenetic pace as you find yourself redirecting several aircraft each second. What’s more, the four types of aircraft all travel at different speeds (the helicopters are frustratingly slow!), which makes timing the landings even trickier.

The game looks and sounds fantastic, with a real retro look and theme tune, and it uses the iPhone’s touch controls to great effect. It would be nice to have more than one map, though, and the game does get very difficult very quickly. I’d like a slower ramp-up in the difficulty level, or possibly the ability to choose your level of difficulty. (Of course, it could just be that I’m crap at this sort of game.)

The latest version supports online high scores, which adds a nice competitive touch to the game. You can even find out the scores of other players near you thanks to the location support, and link up to your Twitter account to tweet your latest high scores.

Pros:

  • Great casual game – easy to pick up, quick to play
  • Looks and sounds great
  • Has an addictive, “just one more go” quality

Cons:

  • Gets very tough, very quickly
  • Having only one map limits the long-term playability

Flight Control is currently available at $0.99 (regular price $2.99) so it’s worth a look.

So it did. That’s quite fun isn’t it! The beach one is great, but the aircraft carrier one seems even harder than the original!!
